Former President Andrew Johnson dies

On this day in 1875, former President Andrew Johnson, the man who had become president upon the tragic assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865, dies of a stroke while visiting his daughter in Tennessee.

Johnson's career took him from mayor of Greeneville (1834) to the Tennessee legislature (1835) and then to the U.S. House of Representatives (1843). He went home to serve as Tennessee's governor from 1853 to 1857, but then returned to Washington as a U.S. senator in late 1857. In 1864, he accepted Abraham Lincoln's offer to run with him as vice president for Lincoln's second term. Lincoln was shot on the night of April 14, 1865, and died the next day, making Johnson the 17th president of the United States.

In addition to inheriting the presidency in a dramatic way, Johnson's presidency itself was marked by spectacle. In February 1868, the House of Representatives charged him with 11 articles of impeachment for vaguely described "high crimes and misdemeanors." (For comparison, in 1998, President Bill Clinton was charged with two articles of impeachment for obstruction of justice during an investigation into his inappropriate sexual behavior in the White House Oval Office. In 1974, Nixon faced three charges for his alleged involvement in the Watergate scandal.) The main issue in Johnson's trial was his staunch resistance to implementing Congress' Civil War Reconstruction policies. The War Department was the federal agency responsible for carrying out Reconstruction programs in the war-ravaged and socially disrupted southern states and when Johnson fired the agency's head, Edwin Stanton, Congress retaliated with calls for impeachment.

Of the 11 counts, several went to the core of the conflict between Johnson and Congress. The House charged Johnson with illegally removing the secretary of war from office and for violating several Reconstruction Acts. The House also accused the president of hurling libelous "inflammatory and scandalous harangues" against Congressional members. On February 24, the House passed all 11 articles of impeachment and the process moved into a Senate trial. The Senate trial lasted until May 26, 1868. Johnson did not attend any of the proceedings and was not required to do so. After all the arguments had been presented for and against him, Johnson waited for his fate, which hung on one swing vote. By a vote of 35-19, Johnson was acquitted and finished out his term.

When Johnson's presidency ended, he and his wife Eliza moved back to their home state of Tennessee. In 1869, they suffered tragedy: their son succumbed to alcoholism and committed suicide. In early 1875, he launched a political comeback and was re-elected to the Senate in June of that year, but was never able to assume office. He suffered a stroke and passed away on July 31, 1875.

Solid Energy fined over miner's serious injury

Failing to protect a miner from a large block of falling coal at Solid Energy's Spring Creek mine has cost the company a fine of $71,000 and reparations to the victim of $46,000.

The company pleaded guilty to one charge under the Health and Safety in Employment Act and was sentenced today at the Greymouth District Court.

Paul Burton, an experienced miner, was working underground in July last year cutting a connection between two parallel roadways when the large block of coal fell on the back of his neck and body, knocking him to the ground.

He spent time in Burwood Hospital's spinal unit after the incident and has been left with serious spinal injuries that make movement difficult.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment said its investigation discovered five of the company's safety requirements were not followed.

"Safety critical steps like these have been developed because people have died in the past. The steps aren't optional - they are mandatory and each step must be followed," said Tony Forster, the Chief Inspector Mining of the Ministry's High Hazards Unit.

The company should also have installed a mesh cage or curtain in the area to protect employees from the risk of falling coal, Mr Forster said.

This technology has been available for some time, he said.

"New Zealand may be isolated geographically but that does not mean we should be behind with health and safety developments."

Solid Energy is this country's largest and most experienced coal mining company, and its failures resulted in serious, long-term injury to an employee who should have been able to expect to go home safe from his shift at the mine," Mr Forster said.

Union welcomes penalty

The EPMU is welcoming the fine and reparations imposed.

EPMU organiser Garth Elliott said Mr Burton's right side was paralysed when the slab of coal fell on him.

He had to undergo major surgery to repair spinal cord damage, including having two plates inserted into his neck, Mr Elliott said. Mr Burton still suffers from some paralysis and is unlikely to ever work as a miner again, he said.

He said it is appropriate that Solid Energy has been fined for its serious safety failings.

"The injuries Paul has suffered as a result of Solid Energy's failures have impacted his earnings for the rest of his working life. These reparations are welcome but they can never compensate Paul for what he has lost."

Mines are hazardous places to work but there are steps that can be taken to minimise risks, Mr Elliott said.

"This outcome shows the importance of stronger safety laws in our mines. We hope Solid Energy has learned from its failings and puts processes in place to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Sharks sign Joe Pavelski to 5-year extension

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? The San Jose Sharks signed center Joe Pavelski to a $30 million, five-year contract extension Tuesday that will keep him off the free-agent market next summer.

He is the second key player signed to an extension this offseason by general manager Doug Wilson. Center Logan Couture also signed a $30 million, five-year extension earlier this month, a year before he could become a free agent. The deals keep both players under contract through the 2018-19 season.

"Joe has been an important part of our success over the last several years and we are excited to have him with our club for the next six seasons," Wilson said.

Pavelski, a seventh-round pick in 2003, has become a cornerstone of the franchise. He was tied for third on the team in points last season when he had 16 goals and 15 assists in 48 games. He is also a key part of both the power-play and penalty-kill units, is strong in the faceoff circle and has the versatility to play center or wing.

The 29-year-old has 150 goals and 186 assists in 479 career games with San Jose. He ranks 10th in his draft class in points per game (0.70) and is the only player in the top 15 to be selected after the second round.

He is third among all American-born players with 158 points over the past three seasons and has been invited to attend the United States' national team orientation camp next month in preparation for the 2014 Olympics. Pavelski won the silver medal with the Americans in Vancouver in 2010.

Pavelski has been a strong performer in the postseason throughout his career, with four goals and eight assists for a team-high 12 points in 11 playoff games last year. He has 24 goals and 26 assists in 74 career playoff games.

Locking up Couture and Pavelski long term was a key goal this offseason for the Sharks. They still have a few notable potential older free agents next summer in captain Joe Thornton, franchise all-time leading goal scorer Patrick Marleau and star defenseman Dan Boyle.

Yesterday I went downtown to Harrison Keevil's Brookville Restaurant for the Sunday brunch-featured "Hangover Cure," which consists of two slices of the best bacon I've ever tasted (locally sourced, thickly sliced, maple-glazed, then baked), artisanal sausage, braised pork belly, two ultra-fresh local eggs, and a hand-made bun with local heirloom tomatoes and house-made mayo. Fantastic meal for $15. Above, two videos shot through Glass featuring the bacon. Below, the view through Glass via a mirror on the wall opposite the banquette at which I was seated. Highly recommended. ...

(AP) ? More than a dozen car bombs ripped through marketplaces, parking lots and rush-hour crowds in Iraq on Monday, killing at least 55 people and pushing the country's death toll for the month of July toward the 700 mark, officials said.

The blasts ? 17 in all ? are part of wave of bloodshed that has swept across the country since April, killing more than 3,000 people and worsening already strained ties between Iraq's Sunni minority and Shiite-led government. The scale and pace of the violence, unseen since the darkest days of the country's insurgency, have fanned fears of a return to the widespread sectarian bloodletting that pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

With two days left in July, the month's death toll now stands at 677, according to an Associated Press count. Most of those have come during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of dawn-to-dusk fasting that began July 10, making it Iraq's bloodiest since 2007.

"Iraq is bleeding from random violence, which sadly reached record heights during the holy month of Ramadan," said acting U.N. envoy to Iraq, Gyorgy Busztin. He said the killings could push the country "back into sectarian strife," and called for immediate and decisive action to stop the "senseless bloodshed."

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Monday's attacks, but the Interior Ministry blamed al-Qaida's Iraqi branch and accused it of trying to widen the rift between Sunnis and Shiites.

"The country is now facing a declared war waged by bloody sectarian groups that aim at flooding the country with chaos and reigniting the civil strife," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

Sunni extremist groups such as al-Qaida's Iraqi branch, known as the Islamic State of Iraq, frequently use coordinated blasts like those on Monday to try to break Iraqis' confidence in the Shiite-led government and stir up sectarian tensions.

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad condemned Monday's attacks, and stressed that the United States "stands firmly with Iraq in its fight against terrorism."

Iraq's violence escalated after an April crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest camp in the northern town of Hawija that killed 44 civilians and a member of the security forces, according to United Nations estimates. The bloodshed is linked to rising sectarian divisions between Iraq's Sunnis and Shiites as well as friction between Arabs and Kurds, dampening hopes for a return to normalcy nearly two years after U.S. forces withdrew from the country.

Monday's attacks stretched from Mosul in the north to Baghdad in central Iraq and Basra in the south.

In the capital alone, a dozen car bombs struck at least nine neighborhoods, all but two of them predominantly Shiite, in the span of an hour, killing at least 37 people, police said. The deadliest blasts hit the eastern Shiite slum of Sadr City, where two bombs killed at least nine civilians and wounded 33 others.

After the Sadr City explosions, ambulances raced to the scene, where rescue teams tended to the wounded and police tried to sift through the rubble. The twisted, mangled wreckage of cars was littered the pavement, which in spots was stained red with blood.

Ali Khalil, a 36-year-old taxi driver, said he was passing nearby when the first bomb went off.

"I heard a thunderous explosion that shook my car and broke the rear window," Khalil said. "I immediately pulled over and didn't know what to do while seeing people were running or lying on the ground."

He said he rushed two wounded people to a nearby hospital before heading back to his home to stay indoors for the rest the day. Like many Iraqis, he blamed political infighting and incapable security forces for the deteriorated security situation.

A blast in the town of Mahmoudiyah outside of Baghdad killed three more.

The wave of bombings also extended to Iraq's majority-Shiite south.

Car bombs that struck an outdoor market and near a cluster of construction workers killed at least seven civilians and wounded 35 in the city of Kut, some 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad, while a blast near an outdoor market in the city of Samawa killed three and wounded 14, officials said.

Another car bomb in a marketplace in the oil-rich city of Basra, some 550 kilometers (340 miles) southeast of Baghdad, killed four people and wounded five, according to police.

Outside the northern city of Mosul, which has been a major flashpoint in the recent surge of violence, a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a military post, killing one soldier and wounding three others.

Health officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Autographer wearable camera launches tomorrow priced at ?400, we go hands-off

Wearable camera Autographer launches globally next week, we go handsoff

It's been a long time coming, close to a year, but OMG Life's clippable, er, lanyard-able life-logging camera will be available to buy tomorrow. The Autographer launches in the UK (where the company's based) and most major European countries on July 30th, priced at a rather prohibitive £400 (we're still confirming a US dollar price, but a later launch has been promised) and pitching itself as "the world's first intelligent wearable camera." We'd position it as an addition to your smartphone and/or standalone camera, like Lytro or the incoming Memoto, for those that have the cash.

There's a curious appeal to it, helped by an attractive design that's predominantly plastic. We spent over three days wondering around, sometimes with it on a leather lanyard (included) around our neck, sometimes clipped to our belt or shirt pocket. For better or worse, it's a truly hands-off camera: there's really no way to frame or even time your captures. The Autographer itself chooses when to take a shot using its five sensors (monitoring changes in color, temperature, magnetometer, motion and acceleration), which means there's a hefty dose of luck involved in how your photos turn out. See whether Lady Luck was shining down on us (the sun certainly wasn't) and check out our sample images below and first impressions after the break.

Perins tourists near-invincible start to South Africa tour

PERINS School have made a strong start to their two-week sporting tour of South Africa.

The tourists from Alresford have only lost once in the first two series of matches.

Year 10 girls? netball (A and B) and hockey team and year 10 and 11 rugby teams have played Somerset College and Bergvliet schools in Cape Town. The hockey team were thrashed 12-1 by Somerset, the top-ranked school in South Africa. But they bounced back to beat Bergvliet 2-0.

This is the fourth time the secondary school have visited the country. The only disappointment has been the cancellation of the climb of Table Mountain because of poor weather. They have also been surfing visited Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned and later will go on a two-day safari.

On Sunday they flew to Durban for more matches on Tuesday against Durban Girls High School and Maritzburg College and today at Ogwini Comprehensive High School.

They return on August 5.

Eric Mack: Fantasy baseball Weekly Planner: Gearing up for the stretch run

Jayson Werth has rediscovered his power stroke in the season's second half.

Matt Slocum/AP

Consider this the silly season in fantasy baseball. You already have more than a few teams out of the race in your league, the stretch run is coming up, and the playoffs will follow. The problem is the players and teams don't have your fantasy interests in mind.

Case in point this weekend: Albert Pujols (plantar fasciitis) is shutting it down and might be done for the season. He is just the first of many that will enter Operation: Shutdown -- which was so immaturely coined by the Pirates' Derek Bell over a decade ago.

The good news is as you lose players for the season -- injury and suspension -- the competition for waiver pickups wanes. Fewer teams are left in the hunt, and the ones with waiver priority (and likely the bulk of the free-agent acquisition budget dollars) aren't going to be challenging you for the flavors of the week.

Here are a few quick pieces of advice on how to handle the season's final two months in fantasy:

Keep your ear to the news: This is especially pertinent to this week with the trade deadline approaching. When players swap teams, there are going to be opportunities created and destroyed. If you're in deep leagues, you need players rising out of the woodwork, and there should be a number of them in the coming days.

Beware of the ax: Biogenesis news has finally come to a boil and claimed the season of Ryan Braun, so you can be sure more dominoes are going to fall this week and beyond. If you have one of the Biogenesis guys like Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta and Everth Cabrera, sell, sell, sell! (If, and only if, someone is buying.) Melky Cabrera and Bartolo Colon are probably the two that started this whole mess, so they might be able to skirt more punishment because of de facto "double jeopardy."

Follow the pennant races: You need to bank on players with something to play for down the stretch. Those are the ones that are going to play through injury, and they are also the ones with the most productive supporting casts.

Prey on the weak: This is a bit unethical, but we are not asking you to live like a saint here. You're out to win a fantasy league. The teams that are out of the race -- or better yet, at desperation or on the cusp of the playoffs -- are the most likely to give you value for your depth. The trade deadline tends to bring out in the inner GM in everyone, so there will be more fantasy owners inclined to make a deal this week than any other point of the season!

And now for the rest of the staples of SI.com's Fantasy Baseball Weekly Planner:

Player of the week

OF Jayson Werth, Washington Nationals -- The team's season has gone south, but Werth's renaissance has been a bright spot. The power is back -- he hit five homers this past week -- and he's finally performing up to a level close to his contract. You should get him active in all leagues now, something we thought we might have never been able to say for him again.

Player of the weak

CC Sabathia, New York Yankees -- You know the season has really gone down the tubes when you cannot even get this guy to perform. Sabathia was due for a disappointing season in a career full of consistency, we suppose. It is easy to say his days as an ace are over, but we are more inclined to claim this as a lost season for him. Consider him a decent buy-low candidate in keeper leagues.

Rookie spotlight

2B/SS Nick Franklin, Seattle Mariners -- This is one of the burgeoning gems of midseason. He had another two-homer game Saturday and is providing some potentially elite pop for a second-base position that historically needs it. Consider him a must-start in mixed leagues when he is going well and a top-10 candidate for the position next March.

Bargain bin

RP Mark Melancon, Pittsburgh Pirates -- Jason Grilli's loss is Melancon's gain. The Red Sox castoff has had a great rebound season and is a must-add closer because he is pitching for a contender. Own him in all leagues. He is still available in over 40 percent of CBSSports.com formats and has the type of ERA and WHIP than can make him a just-as-good substitution for someone in Grilli that was pitching like one of the elite closers of fantasy.

Roster trends

Most added:

1. SS Junior Lake, Chicago Cubs -- The trade of Alfonso Soriano has opened up playing time for him, and he will be a regular starting outfielder now. He is not quite as good as this hot start, but you can take a flier on him just in case. He is a big guy whose power should develop.

2. OF Christian Yelich, Miami Marlins -- It should take some time for the power to come, so if you were using Marcell Ozuna, you should be adding Yelich. He is here to stay, if only because the Marlins are determined to give him a long look.

3. SP Alex Wood, Atlanta Braves -- If you can look past his mediocre start, you might want to take a chance on him in a two-start week. The matchups are not overwhelming for him, and he is a lot better than he showed against the Mets.

4. SP Scott Kazmir, Cleveland Indians -- You cannot be sure he will hold up, but his last start is a sign he can be useful in all fantasy leagues for as long as he does. He is a must-add in leagues where you stream two-start pitchers -- even over Wood.

5. OF Marlon Byrd, New York Mets -- Sometimes fantasy is inexplicable, like the 35-year-old's brilliant season. Byrd is on pace for almost 30 homers and 100 RBI, a career year. You cannot expect this to continue, so sell if anyone is buying.

Most dropped:

1. SP Tim Hudson, Atlanta Braves -- That gruesome injury knocks him out for the season and might end his career. He can be dropped in all leagues.

2. OF Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers -- In highsight, he might have gotten the best deal possible. He wasn't healthy or able to produce his numbers anyway. Count on him coming back strong next year, though.

3. SP Jason Marquis, San Diego Padres -- If you were getting mileage out of him in fantasy, consider yourself lucky. The elbow injury ends his season and perhaps his career.

4. SP Paul Maholm, Atlanta Braves -- His rotation spot was on thin ice anyway, but if he can prove himself healthy and effective again before the end of the season, he will make some starts and perhaps impact fantasy leagues.

5. SP Martin Perez, Texas Rangers -- The past three starts have been less than stellar, but you had to expect some streakiness. He will prove useful in all leagues in the second half -- if only in spurts.

Most viewed (Rotoworld):

1. OF Alfonso Soriano, New York Yankees -- He is an instant hit in New York, and you have to love this move for him, outside all NL-only leagues that are forced to cut players traded to the other league.

2. 3B Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees -- You have to be getting the sense A-Rod is getting closer to the end of his baseball career than your starting lineup. You can stash him, but you cannot expect anything at this point. The Yankees don't even want to play him (read: pay him).

3. OF Matt Kemp, Los Angeles Dodgers -- You cannot use him until next week in fantasy, but his promising first game back last Sunday gives you hope for the season's final two months.

4. SP Jake Peavy, Chicago White Sox -- He is going to be traded somewhere in the coming days, and the signs point to teams in the AL West right now. It is good news for his fantasy owners. Keep him active in all leagues.

5. SP Matt Garza, Texas Rangers -- There have been some that said he is not a game-changer. Baloney. He has won six consecutive starts and is pitching at a Cy Young level, if even just for a few months of the season. He is going to be a must-start fantasy ace down the stretch with the Rangers.

Most traded (CBSSports.com):

1. SP Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers -- This is just not his year. You cannot trade him if you own him, and if you don't, you might as well try to acquire him under value. BUY

2. OF Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers -- Ouch. Some took a gamble and were snakebit. If you're dealing for him in keeper leagues, you probably made a pretty favorable deal. He is going to be a first-round-caliber outfielder again (if his health holds up). HOLD

3. OF Yasiel Puig, Los Angeles Dodgers -- The luster has to wear off at some point, right? Well, he can carry this stretch for the final two months and the NL Rookie of the Year award. HOLD

4. CC Sabathia, New York Yankees -- Nothing has gone right for the Yankees. There still could be some faithful out there. Trading pitching for hitting this time of year is always the thing to do. SELL

5. OF Josh Hamilton, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim -- If he can stay healthy, you should count on him picking up for the loss of Albert Pujols. He is better than he has shown. BUY

Tout Wars moves

Taking a flier on Jenrry Mejia, New York Mets -- The right-hander has a great arm and is coming off an eye-opening first start against the Braves. He warrants a pick-up in mixed leagues and his next start against the Marlins is a favorable one.

My daily lineup

If you play in those daily fantasy leagues, here are the players by position that yours truly will be going with for Monday's games. If you want to challenge me, hit me up on Twitter @EricMackFantasy:

SP -- A.J. Griffin, Oakland Athletics

SP -- Jeff Samardzija, Chicago Cubs

C -- Wilin Rosario, Colorado Rockies

1B -- Mark Reynolds, Cleveland Indians

2B -- Jedd Gyorko, San Diego Padres

3B -- David Wright, New York Mets

SS -- Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies

OF -- Giancarlo Stanton, Miami Marlins

OF -- Josh Hamilton, L.A. Angels of Anaheim

OF -- Jason Heyward, Atlanta Braves

DH -- Carlos Beltran, St. Louis Cardinals

Newly retired Apolo Ohno to work in TV at Olympics

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Apolo Anton Ohno is hanging up his skates to join NBC's coverage of the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The most decorated U.S. Winter Olympian in history will work as an analyst on speedskating, in addition to doing features and studio commentary during the network's coverage in February.

Ohno says he may also contribute to NBC's coverage of Alpine skiing and snowboarding in Sochi, Russia.

"Hopefully I can give people a good show," he said Saturday at the Television Critics Association meeting.

Ohno recently retired without fanfare, although he hadn't competed since the 2010 Vancouver Games. He won eight medals in three Olympics.

"I miss it every day," he said.

At the same time, Ohno said, "I don't want to get in that skinsuit."

He first worked for NBC at last year's Summer Olympics in London, giving him a view of the action from the seats.

"That was my most difficult moment because you feel like you can do it one more time," said Ohno, who first thought after his last race in Vancouver that he might be done competing.

Ohno said being an ex-athlete will help him relate to the people he covers in ways that his media colleagues cannot.

"I've lived it. I've been there day in and day out," he said. "I can share that and gain that trust with other athletes."

Ohno said he won't have a problem asking tough questions.

"You have to," he said. "At the end of the day I have a job."

The 31-year-old skater is living full time in Los Angeles to take advantage of entertainment opportunities that have materialized since he broke out as a star at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

"Olympic athletes have to find a job right after they're done competing," he said.

In June, he started hosting a new version of "Minute to Win It" on the Game Show Network. He earlier raised his pop culture profile by winning a season of "Dancing With the Stars."

"You'd like people to remember you for these great times on the ice," he said. "In reality, you want them to forget because you're doing something new and better. This is the new me."

Hidden Android 4.3 Jelly Bean codes reveal possible permissions manager and 4K video support in the future

Earlier this week, Google announced Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and as developers have spent time with it, they have come across hidden features that might be a sign of what could arrive in future iterations of the OS. The folks at AndroidPolice report about two such features, one which lets users control app permissions and the other is 4K video support.

The first feature is called ?App Ops?, which essentially will allow users to control what settings or information a particular app will have access to. It sounds similar to the granular app controls available on iOS for some time, but the report says that Google?s version of permissions manager is far better.

Additionally, the report also talks about a couple of lines of codes that indicate possible support for XXXHDPI (640ppi) settings and assets in the near future. Now it is unlikely that tablets or smartphones which look good enough on 480ppi displays will get require XXXHDPI support. But it is good to see Google readying itself for next-generation HD displays.

Chromecast bootloader exploit surfaces, opens up plenty of possibilities video

"Give it time." It's something many mums have uttered to their frustrated youth, and it's something that's also uttered amongst the hacker crowd each time a new device emerges. In the case of Google's $35 Chromecast, it took but a couple of days for the HDMI streaming stick to be exploited. Granted, Google's never been one to keep its biggest software projects under lock and key, but for those looking to tinker a bit with their new toy, GTVHacker has the goods. The exploit package has thus far been used to confirm that the software within is not Chrome OS -- it's described by the aforesaid site as "a modified Google TV release, but with all of the Bionic / Dalvik stripped out and replaced with a single binary for Chromecast." Those interested in giving it a go themselves can test their luck here, while the timid among us can hop on past the break for a video.

Austrian flap over bell dedicated to Hitler

VIENNA (AP) ? Like many others in Austria's countryside, a tower bell above the red-tiled rooftops of Wolfpassing village marks the passing of each hour with an unspectacular "bong." But this bell is unique: It is embossed with a swastika and praise to Adolf Hitler.

And unlike more visible remnants of the Nazi era, the bell was apparently overlooked by official Austria up to now.

Ensconced in the belfry of an ancient castle where it was mounted by fans of the Nazi dictator in 1939, the bell has tolled on for nearly 80 years. It survived the defeat of Hitler's Germany, a decade of post-war Soviet occupation that saw Red Army soldiers lodge in the castle and more recent efforts by Austria's government to acknowledge the country's complicity in crimes of that era and make amends.

Some of those efforts have focused on identifying relics of that time and ensuring they're either removed or put in historical context. As an example, officials often cite government moral and material support for the restoration of the Mauthausen concentration camp, where a museum documents atrocities for school children and other visitors.

The Wolfpassing bell pays homage to Hitler for his 1938 annexation of Austria ? a move supported back then by the vast majority of the nation's citizens. It describes Hitler as "the unifier and Fuehrer of all Germans" and says he freed the "Ostmark" ? Nazi jargon for Austria ? "from the yoke of suppression by foreign elements and brought it home into the Great-German Reich."

Local historian Johannes Kammerstaetter says most villagers would have known about it. But village mayor Josef Sonnleitner asserts even the villagers had no clue until the first media reports last month on the "Fuehrerglocke," or "Fuehrer Bell."

"Nobody cared until all this publicity," he said on the telephone. He refused a request for a longer interview, saying he was busy for the next two weeks with haying.

In any case, the government's recent sale of the castle ? with all its historical trappings ? has suddenly made the bell an issue beyond the sleepy village of 1,500 people about 100 kilometers (60 miles) west of Vienna.

In a country particularly sensitive about suggestions it has not fully faced its Nazi past, officials are scrambling for explanations of why the bell apparently evaded notice for so long. They also are under pressure to justify a ruling by the government agency in charge of historic monuments that it must remain part of the castle as part of its heritage? despite the refusal of the new owner to say what he plans to do with it.

Propagating Nazi values or praising the era is illegal in Austria. Kammerstaetter, the historian, has formally asked state prosecutors to examine whether the government's sale of the bell is a criminal offence. He says the change of ownership could constitute a case of "spreading National Socialist ideology" on the part of the government agency in charge of state-owned property

Raimund Fastenbauer, a senior official of Vienna's Jewish community, invokes other concerns, noting that other Hitler-era relics like the dictator's house of birth in the western town of Braunau have become a magnet for neo-Nazis.

"I think the best thing would be if the bell disappeared and was buried somewhere," he says.

For its part, the government says that the sale was legal, along with the decision to keep the bell in the belfry as an integral component of the castle.

Economics Minister Reinhold Mitterlehner says the agency overseeing the sale was not aware of the inscription.

He notes in a letter to Kammerstaetter that "the bell up to now was neither publicly displayed nor generally accessible," adding that he does not see the sale as constituting a criminal offense.

Ernst Eichinger, a spokesman for the agency responsible for government real-estate, says that with a portfolio of more than 28,000 buildings ? many of them huge ? "we cannot search every centimeter" before a sale.

Concerns are heightened by the lack of clarity about what the new owner, Tobias Hufnagl, plans to do with the relict. Two web domains linked to him or his holding company, hufnagel.cc and thinvestments.com, did not open.

Sonnleitner, the Wolfpassing mayor, says has not been able to directly contact Hufnagl, despite weeks of trying.

In a terse email this week responding to numerous Associated Press queries seeking permission to film the bell and asking about its fate, Hufnagl said he had "no interest" in exchanges with the AP.
